Year 9 English Incursion

It’s not every term that we have an incursion on the first day back of school! On Monday the 8th of October, the Year 9 students participated in the Complete Works Theatre poetry performance and workshop, ‘Great Southern Land’. As the name suggests, the performance focused on Australian poetry. Starting with the bush ballads of the 1800s, the performers took the students on a journey through the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Students were able to grasp how Australian poetry has changed and diversified from poetry written by European Settlers, to include indigenous and migrant voices. The girls also got an opportunity to play around with poetic techniques, coming up with their own similes and metaphors. They learned that imagery is usually better when it is specific to the writer’s own experiences. The students have since written some excellent poetry in class based on the poetry they heard during the incursion.
